Chris Smalling signs new five-year contract with Manchester United

The champions have announced that the youngster has penned a new contract that will keep him at the club until 2016, with manager Sir Alex Ferguson hailing him as an "asset"

Manchester United have handed young defender Chris Smalling a new five-year contract.

The 21-year-old arrived at the club from Fulham last summer, and put in some strong performances when called on to man the back line through the course of last season.

"I am delighted Chris has signed a new contract," manager Sir Alex Ferguson told the club's official website.

"Chris has been outstanding since joining us from Fulham last year, he is an extremely talented young defender, he’s quick, strong and reads the game well, he is a great asset to the team."

Smalling was delighted to commit his long-term future to the Premier League champions.

"This is a great club and, in the short time I have been here, I have already achieved more than I could have ever expected to," he told the club's official website.

"I am looking forward to a long and successful career at Manchester United."

Smalling made 34 appearances in all competitions last season, and could be given more chances to impress after Wes Brown and John O'Shea left to join Sunderland.

Inter Milan technical director Marco Branca insists the Italian club have not received any official offers for Dutch midfielder Wesley Sneijder.

Premier League champions Manchester United have been strongly linked with a move for the 27-year-old, but Inter are adamant he is not available.

"No, there's not been an official offer and there has never been the intention to listen to them," Branca said.

"There are no updates. He is not for sale."

"I couldn't tell you [what's happening]," Sir Alex told reporters at a press conference on arrival on Seattle.

"I've not really been involved in it since we've come to America. There's no real interest at this moment in time in Wesley Sneijder for a lot of reasons. There's nothing I can tell you about it."

Sir Alex was quizzed further about any other potential new signings to add to the three he has already made - Phil Jones, Ashley Young and David De Gea. But the manager insists there is nothing new to report on that front.

"Nothing's imminent at this moment in time. Obviously we're trying but we've signed three players and we're very comfortable with that," he added.

"They're three tremendous young players to add to the squad I have from last year – and we've people coming back from loan periods like Welbeck, Cleverley, Diouf and Macheda.

"We've signed Phil Jones, Ashley Young, David de Gea... we've filled the gaps we've needed to fill. The one we're having difficulty replacing is Paul Scholes, which is always going to be hard
