Ben Foster
A touch unlucky with the goal as Tello's shot took a deflection, but he may feel he should have got a hand to the ball. Otherwise had little to do.
Gary Neville
Got forward well down the right flank, particularly in the first half. His final ball wasn't always on the money but overall he was solid.
Wes Brown
Didn't put a foot wrong at the back and was agonisingly close to rescuing a point with an injury-time header.
Nemanja Vidic
Like Brown, Vida was solid in defence and won almost all his headers and tackles. The goal aside, Besiktas' forwards barely threatened.
Rafael
Played out of position on the right but it didn't seem to bother the young Brazilian. He was unlucky to deflect Tello's shot into the net.
Gabriel Obertan
Probably the Reds' liveliest player. Showed plenty of promise. Ever willing to attack with pace and a blur of stepovers.
Darron Gibson
Began the game brightly, but will be disappointed not to have taken the game by the scruff of the neck on a rare start
Anderson
Again he started well and was full of energy, but the Brazilian tailed off in the second half.
Ji-sung Park
A decent first game back from injury for Ji. He looked sharp, was keen to shoot and will look to build on this.
Danny Welbeck
Along with Obertan, he was United's strongest player in the first half. Involved less after the break when switched to the left wing.
Federico Macheda
Flashes of his potential and good link-up play with Welbeck, but couldn't find the elusive goal for United. Denied late on from close range.
SUBSTITUTES
Michael Owen (on for Park, 68)
Struggled to assert himself on the game and never got a sniff of goal.
Michael Carrick (on for Gibson, 73)
Did his best to dictate play from midfield and succeeded in upping the game's tempo. Had a late shot on target.
Patrice Evra (on for Rafael, 73)
Sent on at left-back but spent most of his time in the final third. Should have had a penalty when his surging run into the box was halted.
