blog ngày 4.10.2007 nội dung là về FM 2008 Blog: Marketing FM.
Hello once more. I hope you're still enjoying the demo and giving us constructive criticism/praise on our forums.

Today's blog is about some of the marketing and PR things we'll be doing around the game. I tried to think of a better word to use than "thing", but couldn't. Sorry about that.

Now, in some countries, we sell a lot more games than others. So in those countries, we are able to do a lot more marketing and PR, and cooler stuff too. So if you sit there going "how come in the UK they have panda's parachuting into football grounds with copies of the game playing on monitors tied to their bellies, but in Bolivia all we will see is some posters in a games shop" it's because we sell a lot of games in the UK, and none in Bolivia. Although please note that we won't have parachuting panda's as that would be cruel (panda's don't like heights).

The first thing that I'd like to talk about will be mainly an English thing, as it'll be concentrating mainly on English football, but featuring football from other countries too, and probably some specials about Scottish football otherwise I'll get lynched by the Scottish SI contigent. And that is the Football Manager Podcast, which will be starting tomorrow as long as the recording of it goes well tonight, and it isn't complete rubbish. The idea of the podcast is to basically have me and a few jouno's talking about what's gone in in the world of football that week, but also have a Football Manager flavour to it too, whether that be hints, tips, secrets or interviews with some of our researchers about what goes in in their clubs. It will likely change as time goes on, and morph into something completely different, but that's the idea, and we're planning on releasing one weekly, every Friday for the foreseeable future.

There's also a viral video that's currently being worked on, which I'm very happy with, and should be available in lots of different languages. We are hoping to be able to give a world premiere of that next week. Whilst most people choose a posh London cinema, or Venice, we've decided for as many people to attend the premiere as possible, so had this idea of putting it on the interweb for everyone to see. Clever, huh?

As some of you no doubt know already, we released the vanilla demo of Football Manager 2008 exclusively with the News of the World, which was a pretty big deal in itself and one I didn't think we could top. But in the next few days, there will be a special version of the demo made available in partnership with Coca Cola Zero, which will be available from their website, and their football website. For those who don't know, Coca Cola and Coca Cola Zero are huge supporters of football in the UK, so we're very proud to be working with them.

There'll also be some very large posters going up all over the country in the UK, a Football Manager of the Month competition throughout the football season on Ian Wright & Adrian Durham's show on Talk Sport, a nationwide pub quiz (details will follow soon), plus all the normal print and online advertising in sports sections and sports sites.

In Spain, we are proud to announce a parternship with Juande Ramos, the world renowned manager of Sevilla. We will also be releasing the game through the popular kiosk distribution method with standard kiosk pricing. Mr.Ramos will, as well as being on the sleeve replacing "Manager Man", will also be part of an intensive print advertising campaign taking in the major football magazines and newspapers, doing a press conference and possibly even signing some copies of the game for certain retailers, although we don't know when or who yet!

In France we're working with Match Retour and Les Specialistes TV shows, with adverts in and out of both shows, some promotions and adverts on RMC, plus lots of press and print advertising.

Keep an eye out for Football Manager 2008 cars in Denmark, promotions with Aftonbaldet and XL Coach in Sweden and so much in store activity you won't be able to move for images of "manager man" in Norway mean that the Nordics, which is always an important area for us, will be well aware that the wait is over and the game is on it's way.

In Greece Football Manager is taking to the airwaves with partnerships with Kiss FM and Gamesradio.gr plus lots of print and online media.

In 'Benelux', which the marketing people insist on calling Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg, we're working with Voetball International magazine and also Sport 1 TV to promote the release, as well as again in press and online.

Heading a bit further south in Europe we're working with another sport TV channel, called "Sport TV" (it does exactly what it says on the, um, screen) to sponsor their coverage of Portuguese, English and Spanish football which we are pretty excited about.

In the home of the current World Cup holders, Italy, we're working with two of the biggest football partners in their areas, you'll find us on Radio Dee Jay on the Deejay Football Club show and online on gazetta.it as well as other places online and in magazines.

We're also pretty excited with what we are up to in Australia. We're working with the A-league to give out copies of an exclusive Australian demo at A-league matches so that fans can try before they buy, and get a discount on buying the full game when they hand in a copy of the demo.

There's plenty of other stuff going on in the countries I have mentioned, and loads of stuff happening in countries that I haven't, like Poland, the Czech Republic, the U.S.A., South Africa and many more. We're doing more to promote Football Manager 2008 than ever before, and who knows, maybe all those hours the marketing guys hours spend making PowerPoint presentations might achieve something after all!

Now all we need is dancing pandas with Football Manager logo's on their belly. But I doubt the RSPCA would like that.

    First post crad live
As I've said previously, it's meant to be more of a football podcast, than just being about the game. It's also not the most professional thing in the world, nor is it meant to be. And bear in mind that I've never done anything like this before before you start laying into it too much Wink

As I've also said previously, I'm expecting the podcast to go down like marmite. Some will love it, some will hate it.

We're very open for constructive feedback on the podcast. We are not open for destructive feedback....

If you want to suggest feature ideas for it, please don't post them there, but follow the instructions at the end of said poscast, as that way those involved all get to see it.

    BLOG hôm nay....
    Award Blog
There have been some big changes in awards for Football Manager 2008, here's a rundown on the new features that I can remember! Firstly voting awards have been implemented so for example if you are international manager you now have a say in who wins the World Footballer of the Year award - there are also other awards in different countries that can be voted for. Speaking of the World Footballer of the Year - this award now takes into account performances at the big international tournaments to influence the result, like in real life when Fabio Cannavaro won the award for his performance in the World Cup. Competition based awards also take into account how far the player progressed in the tournament when deciding winners, so a player who played a major role in getting his team to the final or win the European Champions Cup is more likely to be in contention for winning the best player award. This is as well as numerous other changes to the winner selection.

Team of the Week / Season awards have been improved, firstly the selection routine was written to be more intelligent with players getting selected in the team with the position they played in for their club rather than just their best position. Any formation is now supported for these awards rather than every one being 4-4-2.

Some new award types have been added including; Quickest goal, Most Improved Team; Fair Play; Best Referee; Personality and Man of the Match.

The award screens have also been re-written to look better and be more informative, the full information can now be accessed for previous years by selecting the row in the past winners table. Award news items have also been freshened up and a couple of new news items have been added.

A completely new feature is the Best Eleven - this is a type of team award given by the supporter spokesman at the end of every season for club sides and on the 1st of January for national teams which lists the fans best eleven players (plus substitutes) using the formation the team played most in that season, there is also an overall best eleven which takes the best players from each seasonal best eleven to give an all time (since the game begins) best team. This a great feature to look at a few seasons into the game!"

    Cheers

    Award Blog

    FM 2008 blog: In-depth Scouting

Today's indepth FM2008 blog is a look at the some of the scouting improvements with Keith.

"Following on from last years rewrite of scouting, there have been several changes/additions to the scouting system for FM2008.

    * Having assigned all your scouts and got loads of reports back, did you find it just too difficult to manage these reports in FM2007? Well in the new version this will be made a lot easier due to the addition of a right-click option to remove all scout reports for that player. You will of course be able to use this option on multiple players at once.

    * Did you constantly lose track of what scouts you had sent to what nations/regions? Well in the new version you will receive a news item once an assignment has been completed informing you of how many players that scout has found, a list of his highly recommended players from that assignment and also a 'view reports' button to take you to the results of that particular assignment.

You can also access results for a particular assignment by selecting an assignment (scout assignments panel) and clicking on the 'reports' button, and there's even an option to set the scouts next assignment.

    * The scout report card is now easier to understand for those user who just like to flick through a lot of reports quickly. Shortened (1 word / 2 word / icon) summaries have been added to the headings for each section. So for instance, as well as having the text explaining how good the player can be in the future, his potential star rating will be in the heading in the form of an icon (6stars etc).

    * One of the nice little additions to the report card is that sometimes a scout will not only tell you he thinks the player is no where near as a good as your best central defender, but he will suggest that he reckons the player could be as low down the pecking order as probably the fifth best centre back at the club.

    * And now for probably the biggest change to the scouting system this year: The Star System. There was quite a bit of confusion last year regarding how the stars were worked out and why did one decent player get 7 stars for ability whilst a world class player only got 4 stars.

Last years system was based upon what the scout regarded as the best player is that particular position. That player would then get compared to the player being scouted. Here is a list of star ratings for this

    comparison:

FM 2007 - Key: Player X = scouted player / Player Y = best player in that position at club

7 Stars - Player X loads better than Player Y

    6 Stars - Player X better than Player Y

5 Stars - Player X slightly better than Player Y

    4 Stars - Player X same as Player Y

3 Stars - Player X slightly worse than Player Y

    2 Stars - Player X worse than Player Y

1 Stars - Player X no were near as good as Player Y

While the new system will be based upon a calculated standard for a senior player for that club. So it will go something like this:

FM 2008 - Key: Player X = scouted player / Club Standard = standard required for senior player at club

7 Stars - Player X loads better than Club Standard

6 Stars - Player X better than Club Standard

5 Stars - Player X slightly better than Club Standard

4 Stars - Player X same as Club Standard

3 Stars - Player X slightly worse than Club Standard

2 Stars - Player X worse than Club Standard

1 Stars - Player X a lot worse than Club Standard

    * Also for FM2008, international managers can now scout competitions, next opponents and also scout individual players to aid them in leading their respective nations to glory."

FM 2008 blog: In-depth Fan Days Đây là nội dung blog hôm nay.
For today's in-depth blog, I sat down with Riz, who worked on the fan days feature

Before I go into that though, a little bit of explanation as there's been a bit of confusion on the forums about this feature - it's not something that you control. You can't request a fan day. It's something that the board decide to do when the time is right - if you are getting capacity crowds or are bankrupt, then you won't get a fan day, for example. For a big game, there won't be a fan day. They are more likely to happen on those wet midweek games when the board are scared no one is going to turn up…

"Fan days are setup by the board in order to try and boost attendances (both for that one match and long term).

There are four types of fan days that the board can arrange:

Bring A Kid, Bring A Friend: 40% boost to home attendance for this game, Neighbourhood Day, Sponsor Day

For the first two types, the extra attendance will get tickets for half the price so the extra revenue from the extra tickets is 50%.

For the neighbourhood type, the extra attendance will get tickets for free so the extra revenue from the extra tickets is 0%.

For the sponsor day type, the extra attendance will get tickets for free after the sponsor has bought them from the club at a reduced rate, so the extra revenue from the extra tickets is 90%.

The long term effects of the fan day on club attendance depend on the entertainment factor of the game (and the result)."

If the match is a great one, then you will see a further boost in attendance over your normal attendances. This will vary according to the fun that was had by the new supporters at the game.

"News items related to the fan days:

-Fan Day announcement news item will tell the manager if the board are setting up a fan day (will also inform the opponent manager)

-Fan Day reaction news item will let the manager know how the event went and if there might be a long term effect from the fan day

The basic idea of fan days from the manager perspective is to try and play well to get a good result on a fan day to maximize the attendance boost in the long term."

There you go - hope that makes it clearer for you all! I'll be back tomorrow with someone else from the dev team, talking about something else inside the game!

blog ngày hôm qua 16/10/2007. Ai mún thì đọc không thì thôi
    FM 2008 blog: International Management
Today's blog is about international management with Nick from the SI Studio.

As Nick is quite a wordy young fellow in his own right, I didn't sit down with him to discuss this at all. I just let him write the blog. But I have to do this intro bit as someone decided at the start that I was being credited with the blogs so, much like how Tales of the Unexpected always had Roald Dahl doing intro's (that's one for the older readers…), this has been mine.

    Nick?

"I saw Steve McClaren at the Wimbledon Championships this year. As I was working on FM's international management module, it served [ed. surely intentional?] as a reminder of just how much free time an international manager can have. I don't really mean "free time" of course - I mean "non-football time". I certainly don't doubt the man has a full diary but a large part of the job does involve attending functions, charity events and signings. Between international fixtures the only time we tend to see our national team bosses (and I'm talking about the ones who can stay clear of the front pages) is during a camera-pan at the top TV fixtures. Who among us wouldn't want complimentary tickets to the best seats at the best games?

It is in this way that FM 2008 encourages you to immerse yourself in the game world around you. Instead of idly clicking through to your next international commitment (or using the new 'Next Squad Selection' holiday option), your assistant manager will regularly provide you with a list of fixtures which you may attend in order to cast your expert eye over the nation's burgeoning talent. Take in a game or two and indulge the generous travel budget that the FA put unquestioningly at your disposal. Your presence could well boost a performance or two and you could unearth a talent you were previously unaware of.

You won't be the only one on the look out for the next international superstar either (and I'm still talking football, not wrestling). International scouting makes its debut in Football Manger 2008 with the ability to use your international coaching staff to run scouting missions for you in between fixtures. They can check out your next opposition or keep tabs on the form of the players in the national team. You may also request specific match reports on any individuals you wish to keep a particular eye on.

It's not just the staff who are jet-setting. Club managers will also have to take into account that their players may be away from the club longer than they would ideally like due to the new 'travelling' aspect of FM 2008's international management module. Depending on how far they need to travel, players will need a day or two to join up with their national squads and a day or two to get back. Where possible they will attempt to fulfil their club fixtures before travelling but club managers may want to think twice before signing players who are likely to be jetting off to far-flung corners of the world four or five times a year. Withdrawals and 45 minute instructions remain an option for friendly matches but when the national team calls, the club managers are usually the last consideration.

Some preliminary interaction between national manager and the players is also possible for the first time in FM 2008. You might want to ask a player to come out of international retirement (did he quit in disgust during the previous regime?) or tell a player that he needs to improve his form if he is to force his way into your plans. A player's current happiness with his international status will be displayed on his personal page and international morale is separated from his club morale for the first time. The end result is that both club and international manager should have a more accurate picture as to whether a player is in the right frame of mind for a forthcoming fixture.

Most international managers would probably like to see less of the media but FMers apparently can't get enough. International news in this version includes injury worries and replacements, comment and speculation on squad selections, comment on players being dropped from or recalled to the international setup and post-match media reaction to player performance and competition progress. Other media covers everything from picking captains, to players announcing their reasons for retiring from international football or to players being inaugurated into the national team's Seasonal or Overall Best Eleven.

Coupled with sharper national short-listing and squad selection, the international experience in Football Manager 2008 should hopefully be an improved one for those who desire to take on the pinnacle of football management. The game still necessarily retains day-to-day club management as its central focus and it may not be club vs country just yet but my hope is that this latest instalment to the FM series provides a more levelled exploration of the potential of managing at international level.

And, as I'm sure you were wondering, McClaren had more than enough time on his hands to sign an autograph for me. It rained almost the entire day."

    Cheers

    Miles
