Let’s start with pitch sizes. As those of you who are into your footy know, there is no one set size for a pitch in football, just rules for each competition and league for minimum and maximum dimensions. You now get the chance to set your pitch size at the start of the season, adapting the pitch size to your tactics or vice versa, within the boundaries of the competition your club is playingin.
Your team captains now also get set pre-season, along with a vice-captain too. You have to be careful who you choose for these roles though, as it can affect any player in your squad – choose someone unpopular, and a dressing room revolt could be on the cards.
Other teams managers now come and watch other teams fixtures, whether these be international managers looking for the next star for the national team, or whether it be a rival manager scouting for their next match, or checking out your players. If it’s a big name, the match commentator might even notice them in the stand and mention it during the game, and you may get a news item after the match too.
We’ve improved how the game handles rules about “foreign” players. More foreign players are allowed at clubs, with squad selection rules used to set who will be eligible for matches, as well as enforcing rules regarding “foreign” players and naturalisation. Most useful in this area of changes is that you can now see in a players personal panel how long he has until he gets dual nationality, which is very useful for those with feeder clubs where they send players who haven’t been able to get work permits.
Some other improvements to our previous games include better team selection routines for AI, which now take into account even more importance of matches, injuries and the like. Player progression is also improved, as are the regenerated players and the injury module, of course.
A big new feature is coach reports, which are perfect for novice managers, or those who want the challenge of managing at a club where they don’t know the players. The coaching staff will give you detailed feedback on every player in the squad, similar to the scout reports that became part of the game last year, making it very easy to get to know your strong and weak areas, and who your best players and best prospects are for each position on the pitch.
Another nice new feature is the ability to create a filter from a selected player which is kind of hard to explain, so I’ll leave it to Keith, one of the dev team members at SI. “Imagine your star striker is getting a bit long in the tooth. He's been a loyal servant to you and has banged in the goals consistently over the years, but now it's time to find a replacement. Ideally you want the same style of forward but a younger version.
In past versions of the game you would have had to manually note down the key attributes for that player and set up a filter. Fm2008 now allows you to create a player search filter based around the main strength of the player chosen. Once selecting this option a filter is created using the players position and will pick out at least 3 key attributes and then you will be taken to the player search screen where you can view the matches and then hopefully open talks with a view to signing your next superstar striker.” Clear enough for you? Good, good.
Something that people in the community have been asking for for ages is an extra option on the squad status screen to be able to specify for a player in the first team squad to be declared available for any reserve team games in the next 7 days, rather than having to move them to the reserve squad and risk their morale dropping. So that’s in FM08 too.
Have I mentioned that saving and loading are faster than ever before for one of our games? Which is pretty good considering that there is so much more information in the game this year, and therefore more for it to save.
But you’ll have to wait to find out what more is there. Not long though – I’ll be back tomorrow with a blog about some of the changes to do with the transfer system.

Player win bonuses are now done collectively rather than individually, with you deciding in pre-season what kind of bonus to allocate to the squad for each competition, with these monies then given to the players at the end of the season based on how the team have done in the respective competitions.
Wages and appearance fees are now tweaked to be more realistic too. Individual goal and clean sheet bonuses are still there, of course.
Now, the conversations with the chief execs brought up some other interesting little facts. Such as "you know that many managers now just get a pot of money, and can allocate to wages and transfers whichever way they want to?". Now, we didn't want to overcomplicate anything and make people require a chief executive sitting there with them whilst playing the game, as that would have pushed the price of the game up way beyond anyone's budget for gaming so what we've done is thus (and I'm starting this on a new paragraph even though it's frowned upon grammar wise, but it's important, because sometimes the smallest features are the best).
You now have more control of your transfer and wage budgets by going to the "boardroom" screen, and asking to adjust your budgets. If you have excessive transfer funds, you can plough them into your wage budget, and vice versa. Great player becomes available on a free transfer, but you don't have enough wage budget? No problem - just move some money from your transfer budget to cover it. Lots of spare wages, but no money left in your transfer budget? Again, no problem, just transfer some over. The extra control is particularly useful if you're a smaller club, but just as useful for the big clubs too. It really makes a difference to the way you play the game…
Something else we decided to change a bit was adding in specific exchange requests in transfer bids, which appear when you are putting in bids for players. Rather than just saying "they are looking for a left back", if the club concerned are interested in your left back, he'll get named in the transfer offer screen.
A bug bear of mine from previous games which is now sorted is what happens after you offer a player to clubs, and some of them aren't interested. Instead of getting a pile of news items, you now just get one that lists all the clubs that aren't interested, and their reasons why.
Which brings us neatly onto the transfer center, of which there were some screenshots when we made the initial new features announcement about the game (http://www.sigames.com/news.php?type=view&article_id=1275). This is a great new way of sorting out all your transfer bids, with lists of all bids in by you for players, or for your players, making it nice and easy to manage all of your transfer bids, including the status of each bid or contract negotiation.
Finally for today, another small but beautiful new feature. For those who've played the game for a while, you'll know that when you're playing many leagues, you can't sign players from some countries, such as Brazil, until they're 18. And by the time you can, they've signed somewhere else. Yet, in real life, players sign pre-contracts to join clubs (a bit like Alexandre Pato's recent deal). And now they can in FM2008 too. Hurrah.
Tune in again tomorrow for a blog about some of the changes to the news system

Still reading these? Excellent. Although I suppose with the demo out on Sunday, it's next weeks blogs that will get missed.

Oh well - I'll worry about that then. Today's blog is about some of the changes to the news system inside Football Manager 2008.

Now, this is quite a strange blog to write, as there is so much crossover into other areas. So some of this might get repeated over the next few weeks in other blogs, but I'll do my best not to.

Every year we add more news items to the game and more variation too, to try and immerse the player, you, in the virtual world of football management. Sorry to shatter the illusions like that, but whilst FM is a way of life, it's not actually real. The news system is therefore imperitive for ensuring that you know what is going on not just at your own team, but throughout the football universe.

A few years ago we stopped the "one line" news items to go for more descriptive news items to get them to act more like short, informational, newspaper articles, and we've taken that a few steps further this year with the work of our "media corner".

This expansion includes non-player bio's, which provide a load of information about non-players for news items, referee bio's for, wait for it, yes, you've guessed it, a load of information about referee's for news items.

There's season ticket news, telling you how many season tickets have been sold so far, and how many are expected to be sold throughout the season, improved news items specific to records which your club or players might break, reworked media manager functions, effectively a tidying up of the triggers inside the game for news and lots more, even going as far as analysis of cup rounds, including news about shocks and progress for that round.

Then I could also talk about the new media items, such as when an ex-player returns to his old club, or the new transfer offer news items. But that would be giving too much away, and I'd rather you found some of those for yourselves when playing if that's OK. And if it's not, well, my lips are sealed, so it'll have to be.

If I was feeling really daring, I'd start talking about the increased inter-continental club competition media expansion, with things like pre-match odds and postmatch questions for those competitions. Or maybe I'd start going on about the past meetings button in pre-match news that makes it easy for you to see lots of information about past meetings, and even more info than you get in the "match flow" feature that will be blogged about much closer to release.

Maybe if you'd bought me a couple of drinks, I'd talk about the changes to the tickerbar and informational display, which shows competition news for the current manager and some competition statistics, but there'll be more about that in the next few days when I start talking about the interface changes. Or I might go on about the updated news system which means a highly likelihood of personal news that is more relevant to you in your inbox. Or even

But no. What I want to talk about here are 2 things.

One is more statiscal based news, such as "Marlon King breaks the 20 goal mark for Watford in their 7-1 demolition of (insert your own least favourite Coca Cola Championship team here)." which adds loads more personality to the news items.

The second. Well, the second is a whole new way of looking at news. Not only do you now get your own club news, you also get a special news section for the competition you are playing in, which shows and keeps all the major news that is going around in your division or competition, which can be invaluable in keeping you informed with what's going on at other clubs around you.

There's so much more I could talk about here, but I don't want to ruin the game for you by saying too much. So I'm going to shut up for now, and return tomorrow to start going through some of the new interface and usability changes inside the game, which is going to end up being a multi-day blog.
Blog hôm này nói về some of the changes to the news system inside Football Manager 2008.

Facegen technology is a well used tool in the games industry for creating human like faces. These faces are able to age, change shape according to height & weight, and even smile or frown depending on how the players are feeling. But it does not tie into photo's, or not in the way we are using it, anyway.

What this means is that real players (where we have licenses) will still have their photo's in the game. Where we don't have licenses the photo will not appear, as we do not have permission. But neither will a Facegen image, as that wouldn't be allowed either.

So Facegen characters will appear for new youth team players that start coming into the game at the end of the first season. They'll appear for supporter spokesmen too, and any other "fictional" character inside the game. So I hope that's now cleared up. And they look great, and add another dimension to those who love continuing to play the game after the "known" players have all long retired.

Going back to the usability study, one of the things that came as a big shock to us was how many people struggled to find the continue button in particular. So this is much bolder now, although is not the bright green anymore that you may have seen on some of the screenshots. You'll get to see it when the demo's out, but looks nice and sleek now.

Little things needed to be added, like more icons that make it more obvious to the user what they are used for. And text descriptions for what they are for for people who can't work it out, by hovering over them. Less mouse movement was also important, so some of the button placing has changed, and extra buttons added too to make some sections of the game that people might have missed in the past more obvious to people when they are playing the game. We were actually amazed by how few screens were visited inside the game, even by experienced users, and that lead to the birth of the match flow idea, although that will be dealt with in it's own blog later on.

Some things inside the game had to be made more obvious too, like having the database size displayed on the game status screen, or making squad selection rules easier to find so that you don't mistakenly try and pick those players in matches, team information is more indepth for national teams, and lots lots more.

Still with me? Good, good. Although I've got to go now or else the demo won't be ready for it's launch this Sunday, and that wouldn't make you happy, would it?

And one of those results have lead to the new advisor system. The idea of this is a little box that helps you our when you are stuck on a screen. A bit like the paperclip thingy that those of us who use windows don't like very much, but less annoying. Hence the original idea of an animated talking football with a moustache and big eyes didn't happen because, well, it would have been ridiculous.
For new users, or people who get stuck on a screen in the game when trying to do something, it's going to be invaluable. For those experienced users, it's very easy to turn off from the preferences screen, so you aren't forced to use it.
Now, as an experienced user, I haven't used it that much, so sat down with Phil & Ed who were heavily involved in getting it up and running to ask them about it, and this is what they had to say
"The Advisor system was born out of the results of a study conducted into making our User Interface far more intuitive to the user. One of the points raised by this study was that new users could sometimes become lost in the game, especially the first few times they played. So, the idea to design a small system to help such users through their first steps in Football Manager seemed a good one.
The Advisor offers beginner level support and guidance to the user on some of the most common but most important actions they will take in the game. Items such as selecting your line-up, continuing the game, and buying a player are covered. The user will be presented with a list of suggestions for actions they may wish to take in context with what is on the screen at the time. If one is selected, they then take the steps through that particular advisor until they have completed it, at which point they will hopefully now know what to do in this part of the game.
For example, if the user navigates to their Squad Screen, the Advisor will appear and ask the user if they would like to pick their line-up. If they wish to do so, they will be shown how to get to the Tactics screen with both textual and graphical hints, and then advised how to actually make a selection and assign a player to a shirt and position.
The system is designed to be unobtrusive, clear, and concise. It covers the absolute basics of how to do something that the user will then find beneficial every time they play the game, with the ultimate aim of making the user feel completely comfortable with the interface and the actions in the game. Visually, the advisor appears as a small pop-up box, positioned to allow as much key information to be displayed without being obstructed - in particular areas the advisor is referring to.
Once a user has completed their way through the various advisors, they too can choose to turn them off, or to re-appear at a defined time should they find themselves needing a refresher."
So there you have it from the horses mouth. Or, for those of you who know Ed, that should probably be the goat's mouth.
However, we haven't just been looking at issues for new users. There's lots of cool stuff for power users too.
For example, when the game is processing, you'll now be used to getting hints and tips and latest scores as this happens after our last few releases. This year, we've also added in a variety of stats to that, so you can see things like top goalscorers, league tables, matches without winning and losing etc.
Or I could point to the recently viewed players panel, which lists all the players you've looked at for the last 2 weeks of in-game time. Or the special "free transfers" filter on the world transfers screen.
Or the multiple colums in tactics screen thingy. But then that doesn't really give you much club of what I mean. So let's ask Michael…
"When changing your tactics before a match you can now hide the pitch, which will reveal extra columns with information about your players, the extra information can be very helpful in picking the right players for the match. Some of these extra columns can also be revealed without hiding the pitch, by increasing the width of the window when playing in windowed mode."
That's enough for today I think. Just think - this coming Sunday, you'll be able to play the demo, so by the time the blog comes round on Monday, you'll be able to try out the things you learn about the game straight away! Or you'll just be ignoring the blogs entirely, and I'll feel unloved. But hey - don't even give that a second thought, or let it ruin your weekend or anything.

Are you enjoying the demo then? If you haven't downloaded it yet, you should look at the weekends blog to find out where you can get it from.

I expect there are a lot less people reading today's blog than last weeks, but that's what happens when demo's are released. Which makes you special for reading it., so I'll try and give some info out that you can bamboozle your friends with in conversations.

Things like "Have you noticed the weather indicators in Football Manager 2008 yet, that show you what the weathers going to be like?". Or "Have you seen that the team stats and player stats now have an overview panel, but the old views are still available through the view panel?"

Let's be honest though - people are likely to think you are a bit odd if you mention facts like that. So how about this one instead - "Did you know that there's an improved notes and notebook system inside the game, so you never need to waste trees and ink again?"

I asked Svein about the new system and this is what he had to say…

" With Football Manager 2008 we improved the notes system so it can be used in more situations than before. Instead of being limited to players and staff, you can now create notes about pretty much anything and nothing.

You will notice that almost any screen that relates to a player, staff, team, competition, etc in the game now will have a "Notes" section available. From this section you can create one or more notes about the player, team, etc you are currently viewing. The note you create is "about" the player or team (or whatever) you are writing about. You can also attach custom categories to a note. Only notes that are about the player, team, etc you are viewing will be listed in its "Notes" section.

From your own "Manager Overvew" screen you can access your own Notebook. Your notebook is a collection of all the notes you have created. You can also create your own notes here if you so wish.

Basically you can create a note about almost anything. As before you can have notes generate a single reminder or recurring reminders."

You can also set up the notes to give you reminders, and what with lots of important things to remember whilst you are having your virtual career as a football manager, we tried to work out ways to make it easier to remember all these things. What with modern day human brains being sieve like with so many things to remember, like exactly when and on which channel new episodes of the Simpsons are on, rather than the re-runs, we've added in a calendar section to the human manager screen. This calendar, which can be viewed as daily, weekly, monthly and annually to suit your needs, doesn't just tell you when notes are due though. It also lists all of your fixtures, and other important dates, like registration dates and the like if the competition you are playing in has them.

And what's really clever is that if you can't be bothered to look at the calendar, you'll get a news item each month telling you all of the important dates for the forthcoming month. Which is nice.

These important dates are also now added to the competition schedule panels too. We're just too good to you….

Before I forget, I should also mention that there are new wizards for setting up the game. And filters and shortlists now save to the harddrive. Ter's just mentioned something about Feeder clubs showing up in different colours on league tables too, which I didn't know about, and learning a new thing every day is very good.

Two other things that I did know about, to round off today's blog.

First off is some changes to the player comparison screen, or not really changes, but a new way to do it, which is that you can now use the polygon analyser (that thing that looks a bit like an oddly shaped spider without any legs that you get if you change views on a players stats screen).

There's also now a news text filter, making it really easy to find specific news items or news items about specific players, by using the search box just above the news items.

Clever huh?

That's enough for now, I'm back tomorrow. Get back to playing the demo!

Blog FM hôm này né bà con ui. Chủ đề là FM 2008 Features: Bits & Bobs

A few tears today, as this is the last of the new feature round up blogs. Not much point doing others now that you are all playing the game, after all, although hopefully you'll find a few things in today's blog that you haven't seen yet.

That doesn't mean the end of the blogs though - oooh, no. There's some related-to-game-but-not-related-to-gameplay stuff for a few days, which will be followed by some indepth guides to some of the new features, so still lots to go until the game is released. At which point whilst you are playing it, I'll be sleeping. Which at this current moment in time, I'm looking forward to quite a bit.

So, what to talk about today. How about finances? And some loose ends that I haven't covered elsewhere? Sound good? Then let's begin…

Finances first. Now, this stuff is "under the hood" but shows how deep we go into this stuff to make the game as realistic as possible. The finance module has been hugely revamped to reflect the changing face of football globally, with Riz (creator of Eastside Hockey Manager who has now moved over to the FM team) looking after it along with other stuff. With lots more money flowing around in football, whether from larger TV deals or foreign investment, and bigger sponsorship and corporate deals, we have to show all of that without just making it so that every team has huge amounts of money.

Now, I'm not going to go into all the ins and outs, as you should find that out for yourself by playing, and seeing what happens to transfer values and wage values in the longterm of the game. And this would be different for each league and club anyway.

However, I have picked out a few examples of things that have changed or been added to help the finance module be the most realistic yet.

Corporate Match Day income now better reflect the amount of corporate money coming into the club.

Sponsorships are also modelled better, with figures researched being used from our database, aswell as the possibilities of not just kit sponsors, but also stadium and general sponsors, so it's possible to have multiple sponsors all putting money into the kitty.

There are lots of new fields in the database for income and costs too, to ensure that we aren't just making stuff up! Sorry, I mean "predicting using very clever equations".

You're now told how many season tickets you are selling, which is nice, and this has the correct boost to income. But if you make too much money, you might find your club investing the money elsewhere to bring more in in the long run, on top of the Directors taking money out of the club if they want to. Just like real life.

OK - enough about money stuff. Here's something else. I call it "bits and bobs" as it's stuff that doesn't fit anywhere else!

For those who have played the demo, you'll know about this already, but for those who don't, we now have season expectations in the game. And this is kind of linked to finances too, as if you tell the board you're going to do better than they expect, they might give you more money to spend. It also increases the expectation of supporters and the board, so the extra pressure on you mounts up, and if you don't do as you say, you're likely to be out on your ear pretty damn quick. If you want less pressure, suggest you're going to do worse than you want to, and have extra time to build things up. But do keep an eye on the boards long term goals, as these need to be taken seriously if you want to keep your job.

A feature I use a lot, being the kind of manager who likes to bring players through from the youth team, is having the chance to get one of your more experienced players to mentor a younger player. Sometimes though, I got it badly wrong, and ended up having time wasted for both players, by "marrying them up" incorrectly, so both got annoyed. Now, if you have a coach with good youth stats, if you go to a players training screen, they may well recommend someone to mentor them for you.

What else? How about the ability to build up a good backroom team together, and having them work together for a while, creating a good bond between them, and you could find them moving with you when you move to a new job.

If you're a big player of network games, you'll find it faster, as we've reduced the workload on the server on matchdays making your own computer do a bit more work.

Feeder clubs have also been improved a lot, with a little thing such as being able to search for a new parent club without having to cancel your original, the work permit display stuff that I mentioned earlier in the blogs series, being on loan for a season counting as a whole year, rather than the shorter time, which will help with getting dual nationality, but more importantly, once you've been in a job for a while and the board are happy with you, you'll get the option to choose what kind of feeder club to look for.

There's still lots of other bits and bobs, like being able to choose between decimal or fraction betting odds, using Ctrl K (PC) or Cmd K (Mac), or being able to have more foreigners at your club that the limit in a country, and loan out the others, but I'd rather let you discover those for yourself, and I look forward to seeing the posts on our forums when new things are discovered with the full game.

Now, today promises to be exciting. As if all goes to plan, we should actually know our release dates later this morning.

blog ngày 4.10.2007 nội dung là về FM 2008 Blog: Marketing FM.

Hello once more. I hope you're still enjoying the demo and giving us constructive criticism/praise on our forums.

Today's blog is about some of the marketing and PR things we'll be doing around the game. I tried to think of a better word to use than "thing", but couldn't. Sorry about that.

Now, in some countries, we sell a lot more games than others. So in those countries, we are able to do a lot more marketing and PR, and cooler stuff too. So if you sit there going "how come in the UK they have panda's parachuting into football grounds with copies of the game playing on monitors tied to their bellies, but in Bolivia all we will see is some posters in a games shop" it's because we sell a lot of games in the UK, and none in Bolivia. Although please note that we won't have parachuting panda's as that would be cruel (panda's don't like heights).

The first thing that I'd like to talk about will be mainly an English thing, as it'll be concentrating mainly on English football, but featuring football from other countries too, and probably some specials about Scottish football otherwise I'll get lynched by the Scottish SI contigent. And that is the Football Manager Podcast, which will be starting tomorrow as long as the recording of it goes well tonight, and it isn't complete rubbish. The idea of the podcast is to basically have me and a few jouno's talking about what's gone in in the world of football that week, but also have a Football Manager flavour to it too, whether that be hints, tips, secrets or interviews with some of our researchers about what goes in in their clubs. It will likely change as time goes on, and morph into something completely different, but that's the idea, and we're planning on releasing one weekly, every Friday for the foreseeable future.

There's also a viral video that's currently being worked on, which I'm very happy with, and should be available in lots of different languages. We are hoping to be able to give a world premiere of that next week. Whilst most people choose a posh London cinema, or Venice, we've decided for as many people to attend the premiere as possible, so had this idea of putting it on the interweb for everyone to see. Clever, huh?

As some of you no doubt know already, we released the vanilla demo of Football Manager 2008 exclusively with the News of the World, which was a pretty big deal in itself and one I didn't think we could top. But in the next few days, there will be a special version of the demo made available in partnership with Coca Cola Zero, which will be available from their website, and their football website. For those who don't know, Coca Cola and Coca Cola Zero are huge supporters of football in the UK, so we're very proud to be working with them.

There'll also be some very large posters going up all over the country in the UK, a Football Manager of the Month competition throughout the football season on Ian Wright & Adrian Durham's show on Talk Sport, a nationwide pub quiz (details will follow soon), plus all the normal print and online advertising in sports sections and sports sites.

In Spain, we are proud to announce a parternship with Juande Ramos, the world renowned manager of Sevilla. We will also be releasing the game through the popular kiosk distribution method with standard kiosk pricing. Mr.Ramos will, as well as being on the sleeve replacing "Manager Man", will also be part of an intensive print advertising campaign taking in the major football magazines and newspapers, doing a press conference and possibly even signing some copies of the game for certain retailers, although we don't know when or who yet!

In France we're working with Match Retour and Les Specialistes TV shows, with adverts in and out of both shows, some promotions and adverts on RMC, plus lots of press and print advertising.

Keep an eye out for Football Manager 2008 cars in Denmark, promotions with Aftonbaldet and XL Coach in Sweden and so much in store activity you won't be able to move for images of "manager man" in Norway mean that the Nordics, which is always an important area for us, will be well aware that the wait is over and the game is on it's way.

In Greece Football Manager is taking to the airwaves with partnerships with Kiss FM and Gamesradio.gr plus lots of print and online media.

In 'Benelux', which the marketing people insist on calling Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg, we're working with Voetball International magazine and also Sport 1 TV to promote the release, as well as again in press and online.

Heading a bit further south in Europe we're working with another sport TV channel, called "Sport TV" (it does exactly what it says on the, um, screen) to sponsor their coverage of Portuguese, English and Spanish football which we are pretty excited about.

In the home of the current World Cup holders, Italy, we're working with two of the biggest football partners in their areas, you'll find us on Radio Dee Jay on the Deejay Football Club show and online on gazetta.it as well as other places online and in magazines.

We're also pretty excited with what we are up to in Australia. We're working with the A-league to give out copies of an exclusive Australian demo at A-league matches so that fans can try before they buy, and get a discount on buying the full game when they hand in a copy of the demo.

There's plenty of other stuff going on in the countries I have mentioned, and loads of stuff happening in countries that I haven't, like Poland, the Czech Republic, the U.S.A., South Africa and many more. We're doing more to promote Football Manager 2008 than ever before, and who knows, maybe all those hours the marketing guys hours spend making PowerPoint presentations might achieve something after all!

Now all we need is dancing pandas with Football Manager logo's on their belly. But I doubt the RSPCA would like that.

First post crad live
As I've said previously, it's meant to be more of a football podcast, than just being about the game. It's also not the most professional thing in the world, nor is it meant to be. And bear in mind that I've never done anything like this before before you start laying into it too much Wink

As I've also said previously, I'm expecting the podcast to go down like marmite. Some will love it, some will hate it.

We're very open for constructive feedback on the podcast. We are not open for destructive feedback....

If you want to suggest feature ideas for it, please don't post them there, but follow the instructions at the end of said poscast, as that way those involved all get to see it.

BLOG hôm nay....

Award Blog
There have been some big changes in awards for Football Manager 2008, here's a rundown on the new features that I can remember! Firstly voting awards have been implemented so for example if you are international manager you now have a say in who wins the World Footballer of the Year award - there are also other awards in different countries that can be voted for. Speaking of the World Footballer of the Year - this award now takes into account performances at the big international tournaments to influence the result, like in real life when Fabio Cannavaro won the award for his performance in the World Cup. Competition based awards also take into account how far the player progressed in the tournament when deciding winners, so a player who played a major role in getting his team to the final or win the European Champions Cup is more likely to be in contention for winning the best player award. This is as well as numerous other changes to the winner selection.

Team of the Week / Season awards have been improved, firstly the selection routine was written to be more intelligent with players getting selected in the team with the position they played in for their club rather than just their best position. Any formation is now supported for these awards rather than every one being 4-4-2.

Some new award types have been added including; Quickest goal, Most Improved Team; Fair Play; Best Referee; Personality and Man of the Match.

The award screens have also been re-written to look better and be more informative, the full information can now be accessed for previous years by selecting the row in the past winners table. Award news items have also been freshened up and a couple of new news items have been added.

A completely new feature is the Best Eleven - this is a type of team award given by the supporter spokesman at the end of every season for club sides and on the 1st of January for national teams which lists the fans best eleven players (plus substitutes) using the formation the team played most in that season, there is also an overall best eleven which takes the best players from each seasonal best eleven to give an all time (since the game begins) best team. This a great feature to look at a few seasons into the game!"

Cheers

Award Blog

FM 2008 blog: In-depth Scouting

Today's indepth FM2008 blog is a look at the some of the scouting improvements with Keith.

"Following on from last years rewrite of scouting, there have been several changes/additions to the scouting system for FM2008.

* Having assigned all your scouts and got loads of reports back, did you find it just too difficult to manage these reports in FM2007? Well in the new version this will be made a lot easier due to the addition of a right-click option to remove all scout reports for that player. You will of course be able to use this option on multiple players at once.

* Did you constantly lose track of what scouts you had sent to what nations/regions? Well in the new version you will receive a news item once an assignment has been completed informing you of how many players that scout has found, a list of his highly recommended players from that assignment and also a 'view reports' button to take you to the results of that particular assignment.

You can also access results for a particular assignment by selecting an assignment (scout assignments panel) and clicking on the 'reports' button, and there's even an option to set the scouts next assignment.

* The scout report card is now easier to understand for those user who just like to flick through a lot of reports quickly. Shortened (1 word / 2 word / icon) summaries have been added to the headings for each section. So for instance, as well as having the text explaining how good the player can be in the future, his potential star rating will be in the heading in the form of an icon (6stars etc).

* One of the nice little additions to the report card is that sometimes a scout will not only tell you he thinks the player is no where near as a good as your best central defender, but he will suggest that he reckons the player could be as low down the pecking order as probably the fifth best centre back at the club.

* And now for probably the biggest change to the scouting system this year: The Star System. There was quite a bit of confusion last year regarding how the stars were worked out and why did one decent player get 7 stars for ability whilst a world class player only got 4 stars.

Last years system was based upon what the scout regarded as the best player is that particular position. That player would then get compared to the player being scouted. Here is a list of star ratings for this

comparison:

FM 2007 - Key: Player X = scouted player / Player Y = best player in that position at club

7 Stars - Player X loads better than Player Y

6 Stars - Player X better than Player Y

5 Stars - Player X slightly better than Player Y

4 Stars - Player X same as Player Y

3 Stars - Player X slightly worse than Player Y

2 Stars - Player X worse than Player Y

1 Stars - Player X no were near as good as Player Y

While the new system will be based upon a calculated standard for a senior player for that club. So it will go something like this:

FM 2008 - Key: Player X = scouted player / Club Standard = standard required for senior player at club

7 Stars - Player X loads better than Club Standard

6 Stars - Player X better than Club Standard

5 Stars - Player X slightly better than Club Standard

4 Stars - Player X same as Club Standard

3 Stars - Player X slightly worse than Club Standard

2 Stars - Player X worse than Club Standard

1 Stars - Player X a lot worse than Club Standard

* Also for FM2008, international managers can now scout competitions, next opponents and also scout individual players to aid them in leading their respective nations to glory."

FM 2008 blog: In-depth Fan Days Đây là nội dung blog hôm nay.

For today's in-depth blog, I sat down with Riz, who worked on the fan days feature

Before I go into that though, a little bit of explanation as there's been a bit of confusion on the forums about this feature - it's not something that you control. You can't request a fan day. It's something that the board decide to do when the time is right - if you are getting capacity crowds or are bankrupt, then you won't get a fan day, for example. For a big game, there won't be a fan day. They are more likely to happen on those wet midweek games when the board are scared no one is going to turn up…

"Fan days are setup by the board in order to try and boost attendances (both for that one match and long term).

There are four types of fan days that the board can arrange:

Bring A Kid, Bring A Friend: 40% boost to home attendance for this game, Neighbourhood Day, Sponsor Day

For the first two types, the extra attendance will get tickets for half the price so the extra revenue from the extra tickets is 50%.

For the neighbourhood type, the extra attendance will get tickets for free so the extra revenue from the extra tickets is 0%.

For the sponsor day type, the extra attendance will get tickets for free after the sponsor has bought them from the club at a reduced rate, so the extra revenue from the extra tickets is 90%.

The long term effects of the fan day on club attendance depend on the entertainment factor of the game (and the result)."

If the match is a great one, then you will see a further boost in attendance over your normal attendances. This will vary according to the fun that was had by the new supporters at the game.

"News items related to the fan days:

-Fan Day announcement news item will tell the manager if the board are setting up a fan day (will also inform the opponent manager)

-Fan Day reaction news item will let the manager know how the event went and if there might be a long term effect from the fan day

The basic idea of fan days from the manager perspective is to try and play well to get a good result on a fan day to maximize the attendance boost in the long term."

There you go - hope that makes it clearer for you all! I'll be back tomorrow with someone else from the dev team, talking about something else inside the game!

FM 2008 blog: International Management

Today's blog is about international management with Nick from the SI Studio.

As Nick is quite a wordy young fellow in his own right, I didn't sit down with him to discuss this at all. I just let him write the blog. But I have to do this intro bit as someone decided at the start that I was being credited with the blogs so, much like how Tales of the Unexpected always had Roald Dahl doing intro's (that's one for the older readers…), this has been mine.

Nick?

"I saw Steve McClaren at the Wimbledon Championships this year. As I was working on FM's international management module, it served [ed. surely intentional?] as a reminder of just how much free time an international manager can have. I don't really mean "free time" of course - I mean "non-football time". I certainly don't doubt the man has a full diary but a large part of the job does involve attending functions, charity events and signings. Between international fixtures the only time we tend to see our national team bosses (and I'm talking about the ones who can stay clear of the front pages) is during a camera-pan at the top TV fixtures. Who among us wouldn't want complimentary tickets to the best seats at the best games?

It is in this way that FM 2008 encourages you to immerse yourself in the game world around you. Instead of idly clicking through to your next international commitment (or using the new 'Next Squad Selection' holiday option), your assistant manager will regularly provide you with a list of fixtures which you may attend in order to cast your expert eye over the nation's burgeoning talent. Take in a game or two and indulge the generous travel budget that the FA put unquestioningly at your disposal. Your presence could well boost a performance or two and you could unearth a talent you were previously unaware of.

You won't be the only one on the look out for the next international superstar either (and I'm still talking football, not wrestling). International scouting makes its debut in Football Manger 2008 with the ability to use your international coaching staff to run scouting missions for you in between fixtures. They can check out your next opposition or keep tabs on the form of the players in the national team. You may also request specific match reports on any individuals you wish to keep a particular eye on.

It's not just the staff who are jet-setting. Club managers will also have to take into account that their players may be away from the club longer than they would ideally like due to the new 'travelling' aspect of FM 2008's international management module. Depending on how far they need to travel, players will need a day or two to join up with their national squads and a day or two to get back. Where possible they will attempt to fulfil their club fixtures before travelling but club managers may want to think twice before signing players who are likely to be jetting off to far-flung corners of the world four or five times a year. Withdrawals and 45 minute instructions remain an option for friendly matches but when the national team calls, the club managers are usually the last consideration.

Some preliminary interaction between national manager and the players is also possible for the first time in FM 2008. You might want to ask a player to come out of international retirement (did he quit in disgust during the previous regime?) or tell a player that he needs to improve his form if he is to force his way into your plans. A player's current happiness with his international status will be displayed on his personal page and international morale is separated from his club morale for the first time. The end result is that both club and international manager should have a more accurate picture as to whether a player is in the right frame of mind for a forthcoming fixture.

Most international managers would probably like to see less of the media but FMers apparently can't get enough. International news in this version includes injury worries and replacements, comment and speculation on squad selections, comment on players being dropped from or recalled to the international setup and post-match media reaction to player performance and competition progress. Other media covers everything from picking captains, to players announcing their reasons for retiring from international football or to players being inaugurated into the national team's Seasonal or Overall Best Eleven.

Coupled with sharper national short-listing and squad selection, the international experience in Football Manager 2008 should hopefully be an improved one for those who desire to take on the pinnacle of football management. The game still necessarily retains day-to-day club management as its central focus and it may not be club vs country just yet but my hope is that this latest instalment to the FM series provides a more levelled exploration of the potential of managing at international level.

And, as I'm sure you were wondering, McClaren had more than enough time on his hands to sign an autograph for me. It rained almost the entire day."

Cheers

Miles
